traditional gathering and harvesting of kai
Traditional Maori believed that Earth was the giver of all life. Before the arrival of metal tools, Maori used natural resources such as; flax to make ropes and nets to catch fish, bones of dead fish were made into fishhooks and spear points to catch food. The Maori mainly ate birds and fish, in their gardens they also grew root vegetables including- potatoes and kumara. The Maori cook their food underground in what is called a Hangi. In traditional Hangi cooking they dig a hole in the ground with hot stones at the bottom and the food on top covered with a layer of dirt trapping the heat inside.
